POSCO E&C takes the lead in high-rise construction technology by localizing concrete conveying technology

Having localized concrete conveying technology together with SMEs by applying POSCO’s own top-quality steel, POSCO E&C is taking the lead in developing high-rise construction technology.

POSCO E&C has recently combined POSCO’s high-quality steel with concrete conveying technology developed together with SMEs and subsequently succeeded in applying the technology to the construction sites of high-rise buildings like “Haeundae LCT The Sharp” and “Parc. 1.”

On March 25, POSCO E&C completed the framework for Haeundae LCT, the tallest residential complex in South Korea with a total height of 411m, and completed the framework for Parc.1, the tallest complex cultural facility in Yeouido with a total height of 333 m, on April 30.

In addition, POSCO E&C also plans to review the potential application of the technology to 448m tall Cheongna City Tower, which it intends to make as the highest observation tower in Korea, in hopes to increase its competitive power in construction.

For the construction of a high-rise building, concrete needs to be sent up to the top of the building through high-strength conveying pipes. Conveying pipes used for this purpose must be made of top-quality steel due to the high pressure and continuous friction inside them, and accordingly, Korean companies have imported and used pricey European products in the past.

To change that, POSCO, POSCO E&C, SAEAN Inc., KS Junggi Co., Ltd., Chemius Korea., Ltd., and the Civil Engineering Department of Myongji University have together developed raw materials for conveying pipes as well as concrete conveying technology after about a year of joint research. POSCO's non-heat-treating steel is 40% less expensive, 30% stronger, and 20% lighter than its European counterparts.

In addition, POSCO E&C’s newly developed high-pressure concrete conveying technology, which is the first of its kind in South Korea, applies IoT technology to conveying pipes to enable wireless monitoring of the internal pressure, and the technology also employs a chemical solution injection technique that improves concrete fluidity and performance to make it possible to send concrete up as high as 500m at a time.

For the development of the technology, steel pipe manufacturers SAEAN Inc. and KS Junggi Co., Ltd. produced and supplied conveying pipes, and Chemius Korea., Ltd., and the Civil Engineering Department of Myongji University participated in the research and commercialization of the chemical solution injection technique. As such, the project is considered an excellent example of a win-win partnership between SMEs and of industry-academia collaboration.

As POSCO and South Korean SMEs have localized both materials and technology for the high-pressure concrete conveying pipe, POSCO E&C plans to aggressively pioneer ways to export the product to concrete conveying equipment companies in Europe and elsewhere by putting together the production of the conveying pipe, the chemical injection technique, and technical consultation into one package with the help of associated SMEs.
