The Saudi Aramco Sulfur Railcar Loading Facility project was part of Saudi Arabia's policy project that was jointly conducted by the state-run companies of Saudi Arabia: mining company Ma’aden, railway company Saudi Railway Company (SAR), and petroleum company Saudi Aramco.
Promoted as a major national policy by the monarchy of Saudi Arabia, the project aimed to transport molten sulfur generated while processing natural gas mined off the eastern coast of Saudi Arabia. The sulfur was transferred to the phosphate plant of Ma’aden in northwestern Saudi Arabia via the SAR railway, being used as a raw material for fertilizers.
POSCO E&C constructed facilities to store molten sulfur, which is a by-product generated from Aramco's Wasit Gas Plant (WGP) and Berri Gas Plant (BGP), and transport the substance by rail as well as heat pipes and related control rooms. Molten sulfur traveled a total of 21 kilometers from the Khursaniyah Gas Plant to WGP.
