Heavy Ion Accelerator Facility

The Heavy Ion Accelerator Facility project, which was promoted by the Ministry of Science, ICT and Future Planning (currently, Ministry of Science and ICT), was to build a basic science lab in the International Science Business Belt located in Daejeon Metropolitan City.

This is the fifth special research facility to be built in the world (special research facilities currently in operation in Japan, Canada, and France and under construction in Korea, Germany, and the U.S.). Heavy ion accelerator facility is a large-scale research facility focusing on the basic scientific research projects to create rare isotopes through accelerated collision of various heavy ions including uranium to protons.

POSCO E&C has secured a performance to build the fourth-generation synchrotron radiation accelerator facility. Based on our technological power and expertise, we succeeded in winning the contract through competition against the Hyundai E&C consortium. The heavy ion accelerator facility project is being implemented with supervision by the Construction Business Division. In addition, projects for radiation safety management facilities, such as radioactive shielding and radioactive waste treatment systems, are being handled by the Plant Business Division.
