POSCO Pohang No.19 By-product Gas CCPP

The POSCO Pohang No.19 By-product Gas CCPP project is part of a preemptive investment project aimed at improving the environment of POSCO as a corporate citizen, reinvigorating the local economy and reducing power supply cost for the steelworks.

Under the project, by-product gas (BFG, FOG, COG) generated during the steelmaking process is used as a fuel to replace old power generation facilities with an eco-friendly power generation facility with enhanced energy efficiency. As a result, we can secure a stable power supply and increase the amount of self-generated power. (Power plant 150MW x 1 unit)

The fuels that were previously used in facility number 1 and 2 in the existing power plant with low-efficiency, were instead used to power the highly efficient new power generating facilities. The enhanced capacity has allowed us to receive more power and recycle the by-product gas so saved in the steelmaking process, thus contributing to national efforts to use energy efficiently by saving oil and LNG, which are dependent entirely on imports.

By leveraging ammonia and catalysts, we have applied an SCR system that removes NOx and an electric dust collector, which is expected to significantly reduce NOx and dust.
