Sculpture Installation at Pohang Hwanho Park

Space Walk, an Installation Project of the First Interactive Landmark Sculpture in Korea

Space Walk was designed by German artists, Heike Mutter and Ulrich Genth. The sculpture was inspired by a fantastic experience of walking among the stratocumulus clouds.

The installation is basically a structure in which the basic concrete form area is all interconnected and is built to meet the grade 1 specifications in seismic design criteria, and to withstand up to 6.5 on the Richter scale, as well as a wind speed of 67m/s at maximum. The installation comes with an automatic access control system for when too many people have entered the structure or when the weather is bad.

The sculpture required an atypical form of 3D production, so we applied 3D scanning, a robotic total station and design BIM from the production phase and conducted a detailed inspection of production and potential construction errors. POSCO’s entire range of Smart Construction & Safety techniques were also used including AR equipment to check the installation location and drones to make measurements and control safety on-site. As a result, the sculpture was constructed successfully without any accidents occurring and without needing any modifications.
